Birds are very sensitive creatures.
Tey are not entertainment
although they are gifted to give people many hours of pleasure.
We uphold a strickt policy and process for adoption of a companion bird.
In considering you as candidate for adoption our main focus
is to the welfare of the bird and it's happiness in your home.
Adoption is a process not a quick fullfillment.

NOTE: Birds are not children's or adult toys.

If you are serious about adopting please consider your yearly financial obligation along with the innitial cost to adopt in your budget.
We require a home visit before and after adopting a bird.
The cost of travel will be prepaid to us by the applicant @ .40 cent per mile.
Adoption Donation Fee will not be discussed unless your aplication and home visit is approved.

Process of application may take up to 3 weeks.

Under My Wing Avian refuge has had many successful adoptions over the years. Key to these are the sound and often long-lasting relationships we maintain with the adoptive families. We encourage the new owners to update us on the birds’ lives with their new families via e-mail, photos, videos, and social media. Also, we encourage them to bring the birds back to the refuge for “play-dates” with the other refuge birds. This sustained relationship has occasionally led to additional adoptions. For example, a family who adopted a Nandy Conure in 2006 decided to add a new member to their family and returned in 2011 to adopt an African Grey.

Similarly, our founder, Paula, has maintained relationships with a few individuals who were forced to give up their beloved birds because of unfortunate circumstances. In these cases, Paula has worked with the owners to arrange visits with their birds at the refuge, and periodically sends the owners e-mail photos of them. This mitigates the pain of loss and allows the owners to continue to share in the lives of the birds they so love.

Adoptions Policy

Under My Wing Avian Refuge takes adoption of exotic birds very seriously and our requirements for this are strict (but for good reason).
The majority of exotic birds relinquished to us had been living in poor circumstances. For example, they may have been abused, housed in dirty or inappropriately sized cages, kept continually in closets or darkened rooms because of their noise or mess, or repeatedly shuffled from owner to owner. Not infrequently, they arrive undernourished or with injuries untreated by a veterinarian. Given the frequent cases of ill-treatment we encounter, we have to make certain that the birds we adopt out will be placed in a responsible, caring home and not in another bad or potentially bad situation.

Our adoption process is as follows:

You must submit an application, which you can obtain by clicking the link below. Your application will then be processed, checked, and reviewed by each of our Board Members. We also check with other parrot rescues in the area to determine if you are on a waiting list to adopt a bird from them or if your application was not accepted, and why.
If your application is approved by our Board Members, we run a background check to determine if there are any past or pending charges against you for animal abuse. Provided you have no record of animal abuse and we feel you meet the criteria for adopting one of our birds, we will contact you to make arrangements to visit your home to ensure you have a proper cage, feed choice, and environment for your intended new companion.
If your home is approved we contact you to schedule an appointment for you to meet the bird requested in your application. If you have no prior experience with a parrot, you may be asked to spend some time volunteering here at the rescue to get acquainted with your bird and with parrot behavior in general.
