Exotic Birds
News
Our
Exotic Birds Refuge has the
knowledge and understanding that bird shelters/sanctuaries are not your
most commonly chosen organizations to be in the spotlight of the "Pet
Community". Even as a nonprofit organization there is little awareness
of parrot’s needs in the public eye. Thus, leaving most people when
volunteering, joining a group or donating to a cause, choose
organizations such as: Dogs, Cat's and Horse shelter’s, leaving the
organizations like ours and other exotic pets shelters who focus mainly
on one species of animal off their list.
It is our aim to make a difference
for the parrots with one individual and organization at a time joining
our community and shine a spotlight on our Beaks, Feathers and Claws.
The need of public awareness and
involvement is urgency and one that will not subside even if breeders
stop breeding and stores stop selling birds for the very young parrots
such as 7 and 4 year old or younger in sanctuaries today will need the
public support for another 60+ years to come.
Our Exotic Birds Refuge believes
that collectively we make a difference. However, Small
rescues/sanctuaries like ours across United States are lacking the
funds it takes to educate the public, run programs and advertize the
urgent needs of cost to provide maintenance and proper care for the
multitude of unwanted, physically challenged and abandoned birds that
are relinquished every day.
In our search
to bring captured birds to the media I find that we must work together
as a unit in order to truly make a difference. We have a strong believe
we can and will succeed for the sake of the birds.
Exotic Birds Refuge Vision
To obtain and equip a permanent
headquarters where we will be able to accomodate birds in a
larger more spacious area and build outdoor aviaries.
To bring these abused and unwanted
animals to the media and to help support rescues and sanctuaries all
across USA to the best of their ability.
To control or end internet pet
trade such as ads listed under petbid.com
Actions to Date
On January 7, 2008 Under My Wing
has taken a first step toward this vision and wrote an email to NJCAPSA New Jersey
Consumers Against Pet Shop Abuse: Companion Birds and requested to make
space on their website and join our efforts in bringing awareness and
involvement to the public.
We recenly responded to an email
from Libby Williams and she quotes;
"Thank you for contacting
us about birds. I have asked my website designer to add a page on
birds, placed under Rescue, this week. We used to have a page on birds
when we had our old website and the only reason we focus on dogs (and
cats) is because they are the only animals covered under the NJ puppy
lemon law. When we receive complaints on other animals, we refer
callers to the NJ or local SPCA and health department that has
jurisdiction over the store. I know that birds are very badly abused
and exploited for the pet trade so I will be more than happy to devote
at least one page, maybe two, to their plight. It would be very helpful
if you could email some good links and/or info I can post to the page
when it is up this week. Pictures would be great, too, although I may
be able to find some on the Web."
We accepted an invite from the
president of The Real
Macaw Parrot Club in Paramus, NJ to give a
presentation about our organization and any particular avian
topic we find appropriate. On April 9, 2008 we will present
“The Rescue, Rehabilitation, Needs and Support of Rescues.”
Our Exotic Birds Refuge has been
blessed and appreciates the support from not only a wonderful woman who
has over 32 years in bird keeping but who is well known in many
communities. She founded the Sussex County Exotic Bird Club in NJ, is a
co-founder of Bird Clubs of NJ, Vice President and on the
board of Directors for Parrots at Play Calendar program. Meet

Our Exotic Birds Refuge is
continually seeking to expanding in gaining support and move forward to
archiving our vision.
We would like very much like to
receive a few notes from other rescues who would like to share their
experiences and knowledge, as well as their views to help us build a
strong community and help parrots and shelters nationally in receiving
proper funding.
You help is needed in order to
build a non-titanic community for captured birds.
Collectively, we can and will make
a difference!
