"Adoption Requirements"
Our
Exotic Birds
Refuge has set in order strict qualifications for our adoptable birds.
An
applicant must live
in the State of New Jersey. If however, you are close to the NJ Borders
and are
a qualified candidate we may consider adoption. All out of State
adoption
within a 300 miles radius will include traveling fees for a home check
and a
follow up visit.
Homes
with a fireplace
or a wood burning stove are less likely to be chosen due to the fumes
that may
endanger birds
The
listed
requirements may not apply to all adoptable birds. Be sure to contact
us if you
have any questions before mailing us the adoption application.
- Applicant
must agree to a one year probation period during which the care can
be monitored and a singed adoption contract.
- Applicant
must agree
to have the bird checked by our Veterinarian at their own expense twice
during
the first year.
- Applicant
must agree
to Lead and Zinc testing of their cage at their expense if
cage is not
new.
- Applicant
must provide
the bird room or area with an air purifier with UV to keep the air
clean,
circulating and dander under control.
- Applicant
must not
purchase unsafe toys, cages or equipment. We prefer all metal to be
of stainless steel.
- Applicant
must keep
bird cage clean, disinfected and free from any debris or parrot poop.
- Applicant
must keep
parrot on a diet that consists of fresh fruits, vegetables and a
serving of
cooked foods well as a serving of a pellets and high grade seed mix.
Not making
use of diet that is considered dangerous, unhealthy or toxic
such as
avocado, white flowered products (pasta, bread white rice and
the like),
all meats and poultry, eggs, all fried foods, people snacks (potatoes
chips and
the like), sweets (donuts, chocolate, candy and the like).
- Applicant
shall not
make use of, or own Teflon or non-stick cookware.
- Applicant
must provide
fresh non tap water at least twice a day.
- Applicant
must provide
a minimum of 6-8 hours of out of the cage time per day.
- Applicant
for
Cockatoos and Macaws must provide at least a 6x8 ft. area with
no
furnishings for the parrot’s play and pleasure area.
- Applicant
must not
engage in promoting the bird to masturbate thus limiting the caressing
of the
bird to the upper area of the body.
- Applicant
must realize
that interaction with the bird is crucial to the gradual move and
ultimately
it shall be the bird choosing the new parent. Therefore if
you are to be
considered, you must contribute up to 3 months of visitation
and interaction time with the bird you wish to adopt prior to
being
approved for adoption with the requirement
of cleaning the cage and
feeding the bird when visiting.
- Applicant
must show a
steady employment history and the ability to afford the high cost of
parrot
ownership.
- Applicants
who already
own other animal must show proof of animal's last vet visit and health.
- Applicant
shall
provide a smoke free environment.
- Applicant
shall not be
considered if planning on a life change such as a new baby, marriage or
any
major event taking place within the next 3 years of their life.
- Applicant
must agree
not to use any aerosol sprays such as hairspray, Lysol and or any room
deodorizer which it's fumes is toxic to birds.
- Prospective
applicant
shall agree not to breed, sell or re-home the bird.
- Applicants
must sign a
contract of adoption accepting our rules and fees.
